About My Tutoring Approach
Every session starts with preparation. I connect with students beforehand to design a targeted lesson plan. This ensures we either preview new material or reinforce challenging concepts, depending on the student’s current needs.
Online learning provides a level of versatility that traditional tutoring cannot match. By pairing proven teaching techniques with interactive tools like Zoom and a digital whiteboard, lessons become highly adaptable. My students can maintain their learning consistency from almost anywhere, whether they are in a school library, traveling for sports camps, or living abroad. It also allows for excellent continuity, enabling me to assist past students as they transition into their first year of university.
Online tutorials work remarkably well. Throughout my 25 years of teaching experience, I have found this to be the most effective approach to education. I am a visual learner, so my teaching style reflects that. By utilizing a high-quality whiteboard app, I can provide a powerful visual experience that makes learning math much easier.
Students frequently comment on how clear and easy to understand my teaching methods are. Over my 25 years in education, I have had the unique advantage of observing hundreds of different instructional styles. This experience has allowed me to carefully select and combine the absolute best practices to create a highly effective learning experience.
I have many years of experience with both and have found that one-to-one yields better results. It’s a more tailored, focused experience at your child’s pace with the same tutor every time. Consistency is very important.
Research shows that focus quality drops significantly after 45-50 minutes of continuous study. Online sessions are very intensive and for most students there is a noticeable drop off if the sessions run for any longer.
Franchise tutoring operations use a proprietary curriculum so that tutors can be interchangeable. While this can cover many of the same core concepts it can seem to the student as if they are taking two different classes, one at school and one at the tutor. At LH Tutoring each session is personalized to follow the pace and material of your child’s individual classroom teacher.
Students and Subjects
The majority of my students are from Grade 8 to first year university. In some cases I will take Grade 7.
I specialize in Mathematics only.
All sessions follow the BC curriculum. I have worked for many years with students from West Vancouver Secondary, Rockridge, Sentinel, Collingwood, Argyle, Sutherland, Handsworth, Carson Graham, Eric Hamber, Kitsilano, St. George’s and more.
I am always interested in the progress of my former students. Among the many interesting paths they have followed students have attended UBC, SFU, UVic, Western, Queen’s, Waterloo, University of Toronto, McGill and University of Colorado Boulder.
LH Tutoring is 100% online. For most of my career my students have come from West Vancouver and North Vancouver neighbourhoods such as Ambleside, Dundarave, British Properties, Caulfeild, Edgemont, Horseshoe Bay, Bowen Island, Lynn Valley, and Deep Cove but for the last several years online tutoring has allowed me to reach across Vancouver throughout BC and beyond to Toronto, Montreal, and even Colorado.
Sessions and Scheduling
Consistent weekly sessions are ideal for most students. They allow us to build a strong working relationship and identify learning gaps early on, leaving plenty of time to address them. Drop-in sessions are best suited for strong math students who just need quick, targeted concept fine-tuning or a final review right before a major test.
I don’t offer free trials, but I suggest starting with a drop-in session — it gives you a real working session and a much better sense of fit than a demo would. Each session involves preparation from material received from the student in advance to ensure the maximum value. My typical advice to new clients is to try a drop in session before signing up for weekly.
If your child is unwell, simply let me know by 8:00 AM the morning of their session and we will find a time to reschedule.
Yes to both!
Canceling: Weekly tutoring is billed on a month-to-month basis, so we just require one month’s notice to stop or pause sessions.
Switching: You are welcome to start with drop-in sessions to see if it’s a good fit, and then transition to a consistent weekly schedule whenever you’re ready.
Yes – practice sets can be prepared for students on request.
Absolutely! I highly encourage parents to check in. Since students don’t always share the full details of their lessons at home, keeping an open line of communication is a great way for parents to stay informed about their progress and see how the sessions are going.
